Stockton banker voted as Athena Award winner (Reprinted from The Record, October 18, 2005)
By Michelle Machado Record Staff Writer STOCKTON -- Stockton banker Jane Butterfield has been named the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce's 2005 Athena Award recipient in recognition for her professional accomplishments, community service and role in helping other women attain success. Butterfield was recently promoted to president and CEO of Community Bank of San Joaquin, making her one of a few women to head a
California bank and the only such woman locally. Chamber CEO Douglass Wilhoit said that Butterfield exemplifies the attributes that the Athena Award annually honors -- determination to break through the glass ceiling and the power to be a positive role model for other women. Butterfield is a graduate of Santa Clara University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. Her career in banking began in 1984 when Butterfield,
a certified public accountant, became controller for the former Stockton Savings Bank. Three years later, she was named chief financial officer for the NASDAQ-traded company. After the sale of Stockton Savings, she joined with other local business leaders to found Community Bank of San Joaquin, which today reports assets of more than $120 million. "To be recognized for my
professional accomplishments is very important to me, as I take my career and reputation very seriously," she said. "Equally rewarding is to be honored for my contributions to the community." Butterfield serves as board chair for Goodwill Industries of San Joaquin Valley and as a board member for the
Children's Home Foundation; Mary Graham Children's Shelter Foundation; California State University, Stanislaus Foundation; The Haggin Museum; and the Yosemite Club. She is also an active member of the Rotary Club of Stockton and has served on the boards of United Way of San Joaquin, the Community Center for the Blind and the American Cancer Society. With her
selection, Butterfield joins other Athena honorees, including Judith Chambers, Cyril Seligman, Susan Carson, Marian Jacobs, Karen Munro, Iva Harris, Janice Marengo, Bobbie Fasano, Kathleen Janssen, Kathryn Rousek, Jeanette Michaels, Judith Buethe, Ann Johnston, Connemara Reisinger, Charlynn Harless, Kristen Spracher Birtwhistle, Hedy Holmes and Jeanne Zolezzi.
